Small Groups

In addition to weekly worship, our members participate in small groups.

Monday Afternoon Study Group

The Monday afternoon study group is led by Dr. Virginia Jones Finzel and Amanda Hartman Westmoreland. This group uses the Bible but is not a Bible study. Over the years they have many studies. Some of those include Bishop Reuben Job's Three Simple Rules, Adam Hamilton's Christianity and World Religions, The Journey, Christianity's Family Tree, and 24 Hours That Changed the World. They are beginning a study now of the Barbara Brown Taylor book, Learning to Walk in the Dark." There are lots of great discussions in this group!

Touch of Grace Crochet Group

The crochet group meets on Tuesday evenings and is led by Lauren Enzor and Pastor Diane. This group is the "engine" that drives the mission and outreach work of Grace Place because they make most of the items that are sold to raise funds that are 100% given to missions. Last year Grace Place was able to give over $2500 to missions. This group also makes baby blankets which re distributed by Methodist Hospital Auxiliary and hats and scarves for the homeless. These are given to Mana House (a hospitality house for the homeless in Memphis), Room in the Inn and Highland Heights United Methodist Church who distribute them. Over 500 hundred sets of hats and scarves have been made and given by Grace Place.

Inside Council

The Inside Council is made up of nine residents and Pastor Diane. The Inside Council sets all policies for the church and plans and schedules activities. The Inside Council also decides how the money earned for missions will be dispersed. All of the women of Grace Place are encouraged to share ideas, thoughts and concerns for Grace Place with Council members. The Council meets every Wednesday afternoon.

Exercise Classes

On Monday and Wednesday evenings Grace Place offers exercise classes in the gym. Our Monday group is led by Mary Nelle Cook who has been leading this group for Grace Place almost from the beginning. They do a variety of activities that have included step aerobics, zumba, yoga and pickle ball. The Wednesday group is led by Ellen Markwell. Each session includes a time for prayer and devotion. This is a great outlet for reducing the stress and tension of prison life. This group is great way for Grace Place to connect with women in the prison.

The Book Club

The Book Club meets on Saturday mornings and was started by Pastor Diane in October of 2007 and has been going strong ever since. It is currently led by Carol Avens, Marilyn Chism, Sarah Jane Tice and Kerry Krauch. They read a wide variety of books that have included everything from Pearl Buck's The Good Earth, Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen, The Hunger Games, by Suzanne Collins, to Life After Death, by Damien Echols.

For the past three years the book club has been funded by an annual gift from Libby and Earl Julo.

The Choir

The Choir meets every week the hour before worship. It consists of 15 members and is assisted accompanied by Pastor Diane. (We would love to have a replacement for her.) We have beautiful roves donated by Lone Oak United Methodist Church in Lone Oak, Kentucky. Among their favorite songs to sing are:
Lamb of God, He is Jehovah, Hymn of Promise, In this Very Room and Arky, Arky!

We truly love making a "joyful noise unto the Lord!"

Worship at the heart of all that we do at Grace Place. We worship on the second and fourth Friday nights and the third and fifth Saturday nights of each month. Our worship is led by Pastor Diane and the women of Grace Place. Vernita Freeman is currently our liturgist. At every worship Vernita and Latisha Jones alternate sharing the "Word of the Day." We share together in the sacrament of Holy Communion at every worship service. We observe the liturgical year and have special services and events associated with the season such as Ash Wednesday, Holy Week during which we always have a Seder meal and Stations of the Cross, Advent and Christmas. Worship is where all the parts of our community of faith come together.

We love to have people experience what Grace Place is like by inviting them to "Come and See." Go to the Visit tab on our website to find out more information about visiting
